The stunning gardens at Hoghton Tower and lively marketplace spring to mind when considering Darwen, a town built atop the River Darwen and known locally as “Darren”. The town was one of very few European towns to host a visit from Gandhi in the 1930s, when he was invited to visit their mill workers. The Coat of Arms of Darwen is adorned with three cotton flowers, symbolising the importance the town’s cotton industry had in its expansion.
