Flower of Bristol:

The flower of Bristol is the Maltese Cross (Lychnis Chalcedonica). However, the reason behind this is still up for debate - even though it still remains Bristol's flower today. Legend has it that it was brought to Europe, and the port of Bristol, during the 16th century as crusaders returned from the Middle East - but other sources claim that it arrived to Bristol through its use for merchants in dyeing wool.

The 'Nonesuch Red' which the colour of the flower was christened (meaning 'there be nothing like it'), was chosen by Bristol University for its academic hoods. The colour remains vital to the identity of the Boat Club and university itself today, with the flower still found growing wild along the Avon Gorge. Lynchis Chalcedonica - Bristol's scarlet wonder.

Portishead Flower Show:

Held every year at the end of July, the Portishead Flower Show, Flower Show Field, Bristol, is a two day event celebrating the wonderful florals of Bristol and surrounding areas. There are marquees featuring over 300 flower classes, so if you've ever wanted the chance to become one of Bristol's finest florists - it's time to try your hand!
