Charleston, Staten Island was originally known as Androvetteville, but most memorably as Kreischerville, after the arrival of the Bavarian brick-manufacturer, Balthasar Kreischer, who built three mansions in the area throughout the 1800s. With the advent of World War I, however, and rising anti-German sentiment, the area took on the name Charlestown, a subtler nod to Kreischer via the name of one of his sons, Charles.
