A town in east London, located in the London Borough of Redbridge, Ilford was identified as a major administrative centre in the London Plan.
Historically a small rural settlement in the county of Essex, its proximity to London facilitated its growth as a coaching town - with the arrival of the railway only serving to accelerate this growth, and lead to its status as part of Greater London since 1965. The sporting stories of Ilford don’t end there though. In 1737, an unspecified venue in Ilford was used for a cricket match between Essex and London - with this being the earliest known match definitely played in Essex. It sounded more interesting in our head, that fact.
