Historically a mill town, Bolton has been a production centre for textiles since the 14th century - and the urbanisation and development of the town coincided with the Industrial Revolution, as it became a boomtown during the 19th century. However, the British cotton industry declined following the end of the First World War, and by 1990 cotton manufacturing was no more in Bolton. Sports wise the town has a proud tradition, with Bolton Wanderers FC enjoying a long spell in the Premier League, and WBA World light-welterweight champion Amir Khan hailing from Bolton too.
