Located between Darlington and Durham, the town of Bishop Auckland is an ancient settlement within the modern day boundaries of County Durham. The town takes its name from the fact that it was for many years the residence of the Bishop of Durham.
On the banks of the River Wear, just a mile north of Bishop Auckland, the Roman fortress known as Vinovia stands as testament to the region’s long, rich history. The area attracts visitors from across the region and having been built in AD 79, it is one of Bishop Auckland’s oldest and most esteemed ancient sites.
Low Barns nature reserve is a green space near Bishop Auckland on the banks of the River Wear. With trails and picnic areas, it is an extremely popular area for recreation and leisure with locals.
