Often known as ‘the West End’, Theatreland is the area of central London which contains many of London’s largest and most popular commercial theatres. The term originated in the 19th century to describe many of the popular areas west of Charing Cross, such as Leicester Square, Covent Garden, Oxford Street and Regent Street.
Theatreland is London’s alternative to New York’s Broadway Theatre, representing the highest level of commercial theatre in the UK - and is the primary reason for its popularity with London inhabitants and tourists alike. It is estimated that over 13 million people watched shows in Theatreland in 2007, and the number still continues to rise today.
We know what you’re thinking - how many venues does the district contain? The answer is roughly forty, with the majority of these theatres being privately owned and of Victorian or Edwardian construction.
