Check our blog for more handy tips on how to care for indoor plants. About Hoya and Ric Rac Plants The Hoya’s native habitat is China, Malaysia and Australia. It has slightly succulent, dark green leaves with groups of waxy-looking, star-shaped flowers in white (sometimes tinted with pink) that flower from late spring to autumn. Train the vine or hang the pot for a cascading effect. The Ric Rac cactus (also known as Fishbone or ZigZag cactus) refers to the alternate pattern of the leaves along a central spine that resembles a fish skeleton. This stunning plant is an epiphytic specimen that can grow in low soil situations where other organic media are present. Caring for Hoya Plants Propagation: In spring by tip or stem cuttings with bottom heating. Rooting takes six to eight weeks. Light: In summer the Hoya plant likes a warm, light spot with medium to bright, indirect light. Water: Keep evenly and lightly moist; spray often. After mid-autumn, cut back on water, but the root ball should not be dry in its cool winter position. Humidity: Use a humidifier to bring the humidity levels up, especially in winter when indoor air tends to be dry. A saucer with gravel and water also provides humidity as the water evaporates. Misting with room-temperature water also helps but avoid spraying the flowers. Temperatures: In winter, it prefers temperatures of around 54-59° F to promote flowering. Fertilization: Feed biweekly during growth. Propagation: In spring by tip or stem cuttings with bottom heating. Rooting takes six to eight weeks. Grooming: Once buds appear, don’t move hoya, to prevent the buds from falling. Provide support for climbing. Repotting: Repot older plants if needed in standard soil mix with drainage, using pots just a little larger. Problems: Scale insects, aphids, or spider mites if too warm in winter; leaves fall if roots are soggy. How to care for your plants

  • Your plant’s pot should have holes in the bottom so it is able to drain water easily.

  • If reusing a pot that had other plants in it, it is recommended you wash the pot, killing any mould or bacteria.

  • Do not over water your plant as the roots will rot.

  • Most plants need to be kept by a good source of natural light.

  • You should fertilise your plant every two months. You can use all purpose fertiliser.

  • Any dead or fallen leaves should be removed to prevent bacteria and mould. Dead branches should also be removed.
