Wormwood Scrubs has some areas which are a local nature reserve, such as Braybrook Woods, Martin Bell’s Wood, and the Central Woodland Copse. The majority of work in the reserves is being undertaken by Groundwork London, a non-governmental organisation formed of volunteers - but there is currently an on-running dispute about the number of trees being planted at the expense of the common’s open nature. Animals within Wormwood Scrubs include over 100 species of bird, and various common lizards, which are rare in London.
