Prescot is a town and civil parish within the Metropolitan Borough of Knowsley in Merseyside, England and was historically a part of Lancashire. On the edge of the town is the famous estate of Lord Derby, which includes Knowsley Safari Park. The town is famous for the alphabet stone, built adjacent to the Town Hall, which was used as a test of literacy for those wishing to hold office. This Alphabet Stone, an 18th Century sandstone block contains all the letters of the alphabet (minus the “J”, which was not in use at the time).
