A district in the London Borough of Bromley in south east London, Penge is known as an archetypal commuter suburb. The word ‘Penge’ is derived from an anglo-saxon term meaning something along the lines of ‘the end of the woods where the pigs are fed’. We aren’t sure this reflects particularly well on the modern settlement, but it’s up for debate.
A fashionable entertainment district in the 19th century, Penge was known for a horrific spate of murders during the 1870s - as well as a vast amount of pubs. Indeed, it was noted in Victorian times for having ‘25 pubs to the square mile’. It’d make for a pretty difficult place to do a pub crawl, that’s for sure…
