Gorton was also home to the world famous Belle Vue Zoological Gardens in the 1800s, closing only in 1977 to make way for a new and improved version with bigger enclosures. The former site was home to an amusement park, exhibition centre, and speedway stadium as well as the animal park, and set the precedent for large amusement park complexes in the future.
