West Heath House was built in the 19th century for Sir Samuel Hulse, who purchased some common land to further enlarge the (already sizeable) grounds of his house. The impressive Lessness Park was an Italianate mansion built in the 19th century as well, with grounds that included a cricket pitch (we’re getting the sense that West Heath was a good place to be if you had money in the 19th century).
In 2005 Bexley College gained planning permission to convert some locally listed flats into housing for its grounds, with the scheme drawing severe complaints from local residents.
