A village in the London Borough of Hillingdon, and near Greater London’s boundary, Harefield is the westernmost settlement in London. Harefield is famous for its hospital, where pioneering heart surgery techniques were developed and practiced.
Harefield Hospital is part of the Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust, and the largest specialist heart and lung centre in the UK - as well as being among the very largest in Europe. Magdi Yacoub, the consultant cardiothoracic surgeon at Harefield Hospital (1969-2002), was the first surgeon to carry out a live lobe lung transplant, as well as performing more transplants than any other surgeon in the world. We’re just guessing here, but we think he might have had a very steady hand. Yacoub’s work led to Harefield Hospital becoming the leading transplant centre in Europe by the end of the 1980s.
