History of the Christmas Tree:
The evergreen fir tree has been used to celebrate winter festivals for thousands of years. Indeed, Pagens used branches of fir trees to decorate homes during winter to remind them of warmer times, whilst Romans used fir trees to decorate temples during the festival of Saturnalia. However, when they were first used as Christmas trees in the same way they are today remains unclear.
The first documented use of a tree at Christmas and New Year is either in Tallinn, Estonia or Riga, Latvia. The former is said to have used a Christmas tree in 1441, the latter 1510. Both trees were put up by the 'Brotherhood of Blackheads' - a local association of unmarried merchants.
Other early forms of Christmas trees were cherry and hawthorn plants. These were put into pots with the hope that they would flower at Christmas time, and were a show of wealth. Those who couldn't afford the plants would make pyramids of wood and decorate them to look like a tree (nope, we aren't sure that will have worked too well either).
